I just learned something new, and it absolutely sickens me!
I was bullied in school. Badly, I should say. I won't go into that right now, but I take a very strong stance against bullying. In my opinion, there's a big difference in a kid just being a jerk and actually bullying. Anyway, read this very carefully.
Does state law prohibit bullying in public schools? YES Does the law include cyberbullying? YES Does the law specifically mention sexual orientation? NO Does the law specifically mention gender identity? NO Does the law also apply to private, non-religious schools? NO Is there a state antidiscrimination law that applies (or may apply) to schools? NO
Notice anything? I did! While it is ILLEGAL to bully someone in school, gender identity isn't included in those laws!! Bullies are given complete protection when it comes to bullying Transgender and non-conforming students because we aren't covered by the bullying laws!
So basically, some jackass can harass the hell out of another kid for being an Indian or disabled, and they are breaking the law, but that same bully can set his/her sights on a Transgender kid and it's not considered bullying! So these anti-bullying laws mean practically nothing, because the bullies can just lash out against Trans kids and they're actually protected by the same law that's meant to protect their victims!!!
This is another law we MUST get fixed. NO CHILD should be afraid to go to school. They should feel protected by the adults and the legal system, not singled out for bullying.
