Before I get into the real reason for this post, I want to make something very clear. My son is 5 1/2 years old. He has been "shielded" from everything Transgender related. Before you ask why, click here to read my previous post about telling my children. Anyway, my son has never heard about being Transgender, so he certainly doesn't know what the term means. However, something interesting happened today...
My family went to The Burlington Coat Factory today to get a few things. My son found himself a lace covered hair bow/hat. He absolutely fell in love with it. He then proceeds to say these words, which completely caught my wife and myself off guard!
He said, "I want this but I'm afraid you won't get it because I may become a girl one day and that might freak you out!"
I was at a momentary loss for words. We had to explain that we would never "freak out" regardless of what he decided in life. Anyway, I did think this was very interesting, because he likes a lot of the "typical girl stuff". He loves to paint his nails, he prefers women's perfume over men's cologne, he likes to wear a huge pink shirt to sleep and calls it his "nightgown", and on numerous occasions he's worn a hair bow to his pre-school.
At this age, I don't know if I child is aware of their gender in the way an adult would be aware. I DO know I realized I was 'different' around the age of 7.
I'm wondering if my son is going to be Transgender. Obviously, I'm going to let things happen as they may, and at this point, I wouldn't exactly be surprised if my son came out as Transgender, but I'm curious when kids start to know these things. Is 5 1/2 too young? Is he just "going through a phase" as most children do?
I would love some input on this, please. :-)
